My Story: Alma Juanita Leachman Simmons

My Story: Alma Juanita Leachman Simmons

For the month of April. I wanted to honor my paternal grandmother, Ms. Alma Juanita Leachman Simmons.

She was born April 29, 1918. Unfortunately her parents died at an early age and she was raised by her cousin Alice. She was married to Eddie Woods Sr. and had one son, my father, Eddie Woods Jr.

They divorced sometime later and she married Robert Nelson Simmons a little known boxer who fought Joe Louis.

Not sure who taught her how to bake. “Grandmother” as we lovely called her was not known for a lot of sweets but more savory baking. However, she would bake her gooey cake at Christmas time for us.

She was not much for picture taking; however, this particular photo struck me. She was a very classy lady who could out dress anyone with her style and beauty.
